We've decided to get some chickens!

April 2nd  2017 - I am not sure who came up with the idea, me or my husband, but we are excited about acquiring  chickens and having fresh eggs. (We eat tons of eggs) We have decided to start with just around 4 chickens, but like so many others not sure that we'll stay there! The hubby is already talking about adding ducks..we'll see.

I am designing our coop with the idea that if we decide several years down the road that our chicken raising time is through, then we can turn it into a cute storage shed... Shed will be 8 X 10 with a cupola. In the front 4' will be food storage, cleaning items and we will be able to access the back of the nesting box from there without going into the "girls area".  We are reusing as much wood as possible out of the shed that we recently tore down. We got the floor and one wall up this weekend, so were pleased with our progress

April 15th ..Plugging along..hard to get much done with really only being able to work on it on Sunday afternoons.

May 7th...

June 2nd.. I am not the best at remembering to take pictures. Cupola is up (Craigslist find) and metal roof is going on! I probably should not have made the roof a 10/12 pitch as it is really steep and hard for the husband to work on!

Excuse the peeing pup!

6/25/17  - We are adopting some chickens that need a new home and soon and so we are in a time crunch to make the coop livable this week! We had a productive long day today.  The door went up and we had to make the jamb, so that was interesting (another Craiglist find for this wooden door. Purchased for 25.00 a couple year ago and have been storing it waiting for a project like this)

The starting of a brood box and over it will be the roost

Making of the nest boxes
 Installed!

Hardware cloth is no joke...lots of little cuts!

Barney is checking out the coop

 Gretchen likes it too!
It is a mess now but wont always be that way, We got the windows on clearance from a hardware store that was going out of business. 20.00 each!

Now onto the chicken run!

We ended up adding wood shavings to the floor of the girls area and under the raised roost.

We will end up raising this rainbarrel and making a direct pipe into the run with water nipples.

9/17/17 - Finally, got one coat of paint on it.. The girls aren't impressed but we are happy to have it almost complete! Landscaping will be next on the list..
